Ideal boilers
Ideal is a big British boiler maker based in Hull, East Yorkshire. It has made heating products there for more than 100 years. Ideal boilers are very common in UK homes.
Ideal’s best-known gas boiler range is Logic. Over the years it has come in several versions: Logic, Logic+, Logic Max and now Logic2 Max. Vogue is the higher-spec range, and the current version is Vogue Max. Older names you may still see include Independent, Isar, Icos, Mexico and Classic.
Ideal makes combi, system and heat-only versions of its boilers. Check the label on your boiler to see which one you have. It matters, because the user guides are different for each type.
How Ideal boilers show a fault
Ideal boilers show a letter and a number. The screen may flash between them.
- F codes are faults, such as F1 for low pressure.
- L codes are lockouts, such as L2. The boiler has shut itself down to stay safe, and it needs a reset.
Ideal’s advice for most codes is the same. Reset the boiler first. If the code comes back, contact Ideal or a Gas Safe engineer. Ideal also says not to reset again and again. L5 means the boiler has been reset too many times in 15 minutes. To clear L5, switch the power off and back on.
The codes most people see
- F1 means the pressure is low. You can usually fix it yourself. See how to top up low boiler pressure.
- L2 and F2 mean the boiler couldn’t light, or lost its flame. Check your gas first. Ideal says a gurgling noise can point to a blockage. In winter, that’s often a frozen condensate pipe. Here’s how to thaw a frozen condensate pipe.
Finding your Ideal manual
Ideal keeps its user guides on its website. Search by your model name, such as “Logic Max Combi”. If you’re not sure of the name, see how to find your boiler’s model and GC number.

Common Ideal fault codes
Codes can differ between models and ages of boiler. Always check the user manual for your exact model.
| Code | What it means | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
F1 | Low water pressure. | Top up the system to between 1 and 1.5 bar. |
F2 | Flame loss or ignition lockout. | Reset the boiler. Check prepayment credit, other gas appliances, and that the yellow gas valve under the boiler is open. |
F3 | Fan fault. | Reset once. If it stays, an engineer needs to visit. |
L1 | Flow temperature too hot, or no water flow. | Make sure radiator valves are open and the pressure is 1 to 1.5 bar. Then reset the boiler. |
L2 | Flame loss or ignition lockout. | Same checks as F2. A gurgling noise while it tries to light may mean a blockage, such as a frozen condensate pipe. |
L6 | False flame lockout. | Reset once. If it comes back, an engineer needs to visit. |
Ideal manuals
Ideal puts its user guides and installation manuals on its own website. You can find Ideal manuals here. You'll need your model name. The GC number helps too. Our guide shows you how to find your boiler's model and GC number.
Stay safe. You can reset a boiler, top up its pressure and thaw a frozen condensate pipe yourself. Anything inside the case is a job for a Gas Safe registered engineer.
